Field Day and UI's Rock Creek Ranch June 28

The UI Rangeland Center invites you to join UI President Chuck Staben, along with the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences, the College of Natural Resources, the Wood River Land Trust and The Nature Conservancy for a field day at the ranch. Rock Creek Ranch outside of Hailey, Idaho is a 10,400-acre working conservation ranch that is the subject of a new collaboration among the University of Idaho, The Nature Conservancy in Idaho and the Wood River Land Trust. Our team has a shared vision to establish a sustainable rangeland research and educational facility in the heart of Idaho, where ranching, conservation, recreation and education intersect.

Power County Cereal Field Day June 24th

     The Cereal Field Day in Power County this year will feature variety plots at both Rockland Valley and Arbon Valley locations on Friday, June 24^th.  The Rockland Valley Field Day will begin at 9:30 a.m. on Deeg Road (see map).  The Arbon Valley Field Day will begin at 1:30 p.m. at the Arbon site.    See attached map.

     Dr. Jianli Chen, University of Idaho Wheat Breeder stationed at Aberdeen, will present on new varieties. Xi Liang, Chris Rogers, Arash Rashad and Juliet Marshall will present on Cover Crops.  Dr. Juliet Marshall, Extension Crop Management Specialist, will also lead a discussion on wheat diseases.

     Growers in attendance will be encouraged to tour the variety plots at each location.  Refreshments will be provided by the Power County Wheat Growers Association.

Rockland site – On Interstate 86, Exit 33, take Lower Rock Creek road going south, turn west at Deeg Road and go approximately ½ mile and it will be on the north side of road. GPS coordinates – 42.66249 degrees N. 112.94267 degrees W.

Arbon Valley site – Location is on Mink Creek Road north of the 3 power lines.  ¼ mile south of where Upper Rattlesnake Road leaves Mink Creek Road on the east side of road.  Please note -the fastest way is to go on I-86 to I-15 south, take Portneuf exit to Mink Creek Rd. and follow to Upper Rattlesnake Road.

S. Idaho Nutrient Mgt Mini-Field Day July 26th

Save the date, Tuesday July 26^th, 2016, (10 am to 12 pm) for this year’s Southern Idaho Nutrient Management Mini-Field Day near Kimberly, Idaho. This year, we will be meeting directly at the long term manure study field site near the USDA ARS and UI Kimberly station buildings. A map is attached for those who need it (go to the starred “manure study” spot). Water and light snacks will be provided. The field day will be held solely at the manure study field site (no bus will be provided).

For this year’s field day, we will be discussing a wide variety of topic, including the response of sugar beets and potatoes to dairy manure applications (Amber Moore, Carl Strausbaugh, Mriganka De, and Nora Olsen), corn N fertilizer rate studies (David Tarkalson), cover crop/manure/corn research study (April Leytem), barley irrigation and N management (Christopher Rogers), dairy manure management techniques (Lide Chen), and silica applications to crops (Olga Walsh).

Save the Date Rangeland Fall Forum Mark your calendars for October 22, 2015 to attend the Rangeland Fall Forum. This year's event will take place near Twin Falls, Idaho. Fires on sagebrush rangelands are an ever-increasing reality of living in Idaho and the West. Many factors, including invasive plants, drier hotter summers, and human activities, encourage wildfires that threaten both human communities and habitat for native plants and animals. Innovations and coordinated efforts in rangeland fire management are being implemented to combat these threats and mitigate damage.

Tuesday, July 21- Soda Springs Cereal Field Day

4:00 pm – Variety Trial plots at Sid Cellan’s farm at 3 Mile Knoll Rd 3 miles north of Hooper/Gov’t dam road intersection. After going north past Monsanto, take a right at the substation and the plots are approx. 3⁄4 mile on the left (west). 

Winter plot tour will follow at 2500 Sorenson Road, west of Gov’t Dam Road.  Dinner to follow at Hooper Springs Park, sponsored by Caribou County Grain Growers

Wednesday, July 22 – Direct Seed Field Day at Gordan Gallup’s farm at 1922 Swan Valley Highway, 10:00 am to 1:00 pm, with lunch

Sponsored by the Idaho Wheat Commission and University of Idaho

Dr. Juliet Marshall, UI Cereal Agronomy/Pathology Specialist will present an overview of recent research on production systems, including cover crops, and wheat varieties for dry land grain.  Information on disease and fertility also will be covered.

Thursday, July 30 – Ashton Cereal Field Day at Alan Baum’s farm, ¼ mile north of Hwy 47 on 3875 East, Ashton, 10:00 am to noon, with lunch to follow.

Master Gardener 2015 Regional Convention June 25-26, 2015

The 2015 Master Gardener Convention will take place on the BYU-Idaho Campus at the Thomas E. Ricks Gardens at 525 South Center Street in Rexburg on June 25th and 26th.  The program is sponsored by the University of Idaho Extension.   The program is open to master gardeners, students and to the public. Pre-registration is requested.

Thursday, June 25th will kick off with a keynote presentation by Dr. Stephen Love, "Where Wildflowers and Roads Meet".  The presentation will be located in the Benson Building in Room #219 on th eBYU-Idaho Campus.  It will begin at 6 :00 PM.

The Convention Will continue on Friday, June 26th with classes and tours.  Registration and check in will be from 8:00 AM to 8:40 AM on the East side of the Benson Building.  Look for signs pointing the way.
