Lost River Grazing Academy to be Held September 13th-16th, 2022

 September 13-16th, Eagle Valley Ranch, Salmon, Idaho

 The Lost Rivers Grazing Academy is a 4-day hands-on workshop for livestock operators and their advisers and consults that want to harvest and sell more of the sun’s energy through grazing, improve soil health, reduce erosion, and reduce costs, primarily on irrigated pastures.
The Academy was first held in 1994 in the Lost River Valley and has been held at least once annually since then, except when disrupted by the pandemic.  The program has won state and national awards for Extension programs and is has been recognized internationally.  It has been attended by agency personnel and livestock operators from all over the western US, as well as from eastern US, Canada, Mexico and South America.

2016 Western Ag Industry Survey

In early 2016, the idea for the Agricultural Industry Survey originated from a similar effort administered by a group of Colorado Extension Specialists. Members of the Western Extension Committees (WEC) on Farm Management and Marketing, made up of Extension economists from 13 Western States, Guam, and the U.S. Pacific Islands then initiated a survey specific to agriculture in the west.
The survey invitation was emailed to the WEC membership who distributed it through Extension contact channels.

Crop Insurance Deadlines Near in Idaho, Oregon and Washington-March 15th


Producers Need to Make Insurance Decisions Soon

SPOKANE, Wash., Jan. 11, 2016 – USDA’s Risk Management Agency (RMA) reminds producers that the final date to apply for Whole-Farm Revenue Protection and insurance coverage on all other spring crops (except wheat in counties with fall and spring planted types) is March 15.The final date to apply for coverage on spring planted onions in Idaho, Oregon, and Washington, and cabbage in Oregon and Washington is February 1. Current policyholders who wish to make changes to their existing coverage also have until the sales closing date to do so. Crop insurance provides protection against a loss in production due to natural perils, such as drought or excessive moisture.

New Idaho Custom Rate Guide Available

The extremely popular Bulletin 729, Custom Rate for Idaho Agricultural Operations has been revised for 2013-14 and is now available.  The publication by Paul Patterson and Kathleen Painter reviews a survey of custom rates from the 3 regions of Idaho.  It includes an explanation  of how to evaluate cost of operating machinery custom basis.

The publication may be ordered from the University of Idaho Extension Publication Catalog in printed form for a fee, or downloaded as a PDF file for free.

USDA Announces 2016 Small Grains Projected Prices


Barley and Wheat Prices Available

SPOKANE, Wash., Sept. 21, 2015 — USDA’s Risk Management Agency (RMA) today announced the 2016 projected prices for winter and spring wheat, and winter barley for Idaho, Oregon, and Washington. These prices are critical for producers evaluating their crop insurance coverage options.

Time is Running Out for New Farm Bill Elections!

Time is running out to make your elections under the 2015 farm bill!

Must choose WFRP and SCO by March 15, 2015:
Must choose ARC or PLC by March 31, 2015 (1 time for the life of the 5-year farm bill) :
Must have a signed AD-1026 form on file with FSA by June 1st, 2015

In addition you have an opportunity to update your cereal base acreage, which happens only infrequently.

Idaho State Department of Agriculture Will Host Farm to School Conference for Producers

Every weekday from September to May, nearly 280,000 students in Idaho have the opportunity to eat a nutritional and affordable lunch or breakfast at their school.  Meals served in 762 public schools across the state include a wide variety of foods including fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grain breads, beans, meats and dairy products – many of which can be produced by Idaho farmers, ranchers and dairymen.  To help Idaho producers take advantage of this vast consumer market, the Idaho State Department of Agriculture’s Idaho Preferred program will host a “Farm to School” workshop on Friday, February 6, 2015 in Nampa.  This workshop is funded by a USDA Farm to School Conference and Events grant awarded to ISDA in September 2014.

SPOKANE, Wash., Jan 26, 2015 – USDA’s Risk Management Agency (RMA) reminds farmers in Idaho, Oregon and Washington that the final date to purchase or modify federal crop insurance coverage on most 2015 spring-planted crops is approaching. Farmers can also purchase the new Whole-Farm Revenue Protection option for 2015 crops.
